What a Quick Diagnosis looks like.
A real example for a 2014 Ford Focus 1.6 with codes P0301 and P0171. Yours will be written for your car.
Thanks for the codes and the description (rough idle when cold, light came on after a motorway run).
Most likely: a misfire on cylinder 1 (P0301), with a slightly lean mixture showing as P0171.
WHAT THAT USUALLY MEANS
- A weak or failing ignition coil on cylinder 1 is the most common cause of a single cylinder misfire on this engine.
- The lean code often rides along with a misfire, or points at a small air leak or a dirty MAF sensor.
WHAT TO CHECK FIRST
- Swap the cylinder 1 ignition coil with cylinder 2, clear the codes and drive.
- If the misfire follows to cylinder 2 (P0302 appears), fit a new coil.
- If it stays on cylinder 1, check the spark plug and the injector connector there.
- For the lean code, look for split vacuum hoses and give the MAF sensor a clean.
This is a DIY reasonable job. If the misfire is still there after the coil and plug, reply and we'll go deeper.
